    To me watching Good Omens as a 22 year old feels like giving a comforting hug to my 16 year old Supernatural indulging self. My Tumblr blog serves as a testimony of, while somewhat embarrassing, also a completely unmasked expression of my quirky self that I wouldn't be able to express elsewhere without being ridiculed. And witnessing the resurgence of TV shows that validate all the big emotions that a person can have towards a fictional character is a feeling I didn't know how much I needed before I experienced it.

    The way 2012-2014 Tumblr had an absolute CHOKEHOLD on me. In 2012 I turned 18 and went straight from being homeschooled with no Internet access to being in college with a laptop. And Tumblr was the only place you could post pron on the Internet. I was deeeeep into the supernatural fandom and fanfiction and we were all a bunch of sickos just having a grand old time.

    I was a fan of Sherlock for a long time and I was told I was being queer baited but at the time it was only “queer representation” I could find so I never truly understood what that meant. When I finally watched Good Omens for the first time it changed my life. I’m forever grateful for Good Omens for showing me a community that actually appreciated me.

    i was never on Tumblr but i’ve been a Doctor Who stan since i was 8 and loved Sherlock since I was 10. Doctor Who’s writing has… declined to say the least (hopefully the new series is better!) and Sherlock DEFINITELY has problems looking back but idk i still love both. Doctor Who will always have a special place in my heart no matter what happens, it’s been such a big part of my life for over a decade (I’m 21 now) and the show may have flaws but it knows that… well, at least it did before Moffat. RTD’s era never took itself TOO seriously, it had serious moments but it was always fun, cheesy and goofy at times but that was the point. Moffat has always taken himself/his writing too seriously and that’s one of the MANY problems I have with him. I still love his era of DW but I have a lot of problems with him as a show runner. As a one off writer (episodes like Blink, The Slience in the Library, The Girl in the Fireplace, etc.) I think he’s MUCH better off. Both shows have great things about them but him being so dismissive of his viewers at the time is really gross. Like Uncle Herman said, they were paying his BILLS. He lost both Sherlock and Doctor Who in 2017 and has become a bit of a joke online now which he kinda deserves…

    tbh out of superwholock sherlock bbc was the only one that was a mess from the beginning. doctor who goes up and down in quality all the time like clockwork and supernatural was legit good for the first few seasons until they lost the plot. if they ended it after season 5 or 7 or 8 it would've been remembered as a decent or pretty good show

    I was a part of the "lock" - and it was all because of the excessive Johnlock GIF spam on my Tumblr feed. They successfully pushed me to see the show, fell for the pair and I found myself waiting for them to go canon for 4-5 years..? There were a couple of blogs who did extremely detailed research and meta subtext reading on EACH scene, frame by frame, dialogue, props, costumes, even a note of the background music could be a clue of Johnlock's gayness. I read those analysis almost everyday after school. It finally got me disgusted at one point when things got too much and the show also went downhill. Still fun times though

    I watched the Sherlock show without knowing anything about the ships and stuff, and to me it didn't feel like anything other than a platonic friendship. When they ask them if they're a couple I took it as a nod to that part of society that things two single men living together must be gay, and people that says that about the books too. Kinda like with Batman and Robin. Also Irene Adler wasn't lesbian in the book, and in the show she said she was gay but she seemed like she just had no preferences since she was a dominatrix and had intimate encounters with men too. So I took it as she's just bi.

    • @jennycono
      @jennycono 2 месяца назад +2

      I agree. I think that people really want to see representation in their favorite shows and they see some things that aren't there. I do definitely believe that queen baiting exists but I also think that friendship between men can be misconstrued as well. I'm happy to see that there are new Fandom with actual queen characters, though.

    I wasn't apart of the tumblr craze but I did get the ripples from the waves it made, as a lot of that content made its way to Pinterest (my choice of social media as I wasn't allowed to have tumblr), and I don't know if you could consider that a part of that history, but I think it's really interesting to see this kind of retrospective. Honestly, I think these "cringe" moments in our lives are really important cuz it creates a sense of community and relatabilty, especially for the queer afab people. I look back on that very fondly.

    I'm curious if anyone else never felt queerbaited with these shows? To be clear those who did are perfectly valid, but as an aromantic queer person who LIVED for Superwholock back in the day I always just really enjoyed the intense platonic relationships. I felt like it showed you could love fiercely in an entirely platonic way, which was (and is) my life experience that doesn't get represented all that often because everything is about romance. Just wondering if anyone else had that experience and if maybe you discovered you were aro too? (Maybe we can reclaim queerbaiting as accidental aro/ace representation 😂)
    Also I always thought the "lesbians falling for men" were bi, which I thought was cool because bi-erasure is usually what happens instead 🤷‍♀️
    These things were just my perspectives though. It probably makes more sense that these writers were doing these things with sleezy intentions while I just ended up interpreting sunshine and rainbows lol

      Well supernatural and sherlock defenily had queer baiting i still love them and they still helped many lgbt people accept themselves Plus got some many people to cry, laugh and make friends Plus spn and doctor who Will always be confort shows. Byt doctor who never was queer baiting in MY opinion, cuz many of the writters and producers were queer, the doctor is gender fluid and kinda ace, Plus many gay characthers too, the only problem is that bbc didnt allow the doctor to be shown as fully gay, but i wouldnt count that as querr bait, more as censorship

    Speaking as someone who had very little interaction with Superwholock (fans or shows) or most fan bases until 2017 or so, it's kind of funny hearing what Mishapocalypse was because it was basically Shirou Day on Twitter (as in Shirou Emiya from the anime/visual novel Fate/Stay Night) except more purposeful and for one year only

    While I was only a strong 1/3 of the superwholock holy trinity (sherlock stan, my best friend was a supernatural stan), I was still well immersed in the culture. I don’t think it’s right to completely dog on these shows - they do deserve their flowers in some way. Outside of the queerbaiting, I still think Sherlock is one of the best pieces of television I’ve ever seen. Music, production, writing, acting, period. Regardless of their faults, which, my god show me an older piece of media - book, show, music, movie, etc - that doesn’t have any faults of any kind, I don’t think it’s fair to discount them to being problematic based off just that, they’re still good shows. A little out of touch, yes, but they made a mark on us and impacted our lives nonetheless. As a fangirl myself I didn’t take any offense to the Sherlock episode clowning on tumblr stans. I thought it was quite funny. 😂

    For me spn and doctor who will always be speacial, despite spn having many problems, it made me laugh, cry, and learn about found family , it is still somehow a confort show with caracthers i relate to, plus even tho it had queer baiting still was what made SO many queer people undearstand and accept themselves and made a whole comunity find and support eachother (most of the time lol). supernatural is not medíocre imo, it just became bad over time, bc seasons 1-5 were great. meanwhile doctor who is always on up and dows but season 2 -7 were great too, not to mention DW made me accept my weird side more than any other show ever did, and it never had queer bait in the russel and david tennant era, since russel IS gay, the doctor is ace and gender fluid, so doctor who imo always had the most healthy fandom and story out of the 3, it was ahead of its time, but i think they were held back by BBC.

Then a year or two later I watched Sherlock. I loved the two shows but Sherlock has little to no rewatch value and since no new episodes are coming out I’m not in the fandom. I tried watching supernatural cus I thought it’d be funny but it was so boring and they were killing monsters so I couldn’t watch it

    Gotta say as a British 2000 baby I have been a Doctor Who fan for nearly as long as I can remember. However, during season 6 of Doctor Who (2011?) I majorly soured toward it, mainly because I heavily disliked Steven Moffat as a show writer. Because of that I chose not to watch Sherlock cos I knew it would annoy me in the same way Doctor Who did (and from conversations I’ve had with people who watched it, I guess I wasn’t wrong). I also never watched Supernatural because the number of seasons and episodes scared me off (even tho I later watched Buffy and Angel in their entirety at 17 😅). However, can’t say I didn’t partake in ‘cringe’ fandoms during my teens/2010s. I watched OUAT since it first aired and Teen Wolf which were also guilty of queer baiting. But tbh I knew even back then that those characters would never hook up. As a closeted bisexual girl back then I guess I knew the boring straight vibe well enough to see it in those shows and writers, even with my queer side repressed (and yes I know Mark Gatiss and Jeff Davis aren’t straight but that doesn’t change the fact they made straight, queer-phobic shows). But funnily enough I have seen all three shows of OurGoodShadows and that was not intentional 😂. I had no idea there was a fandom linking those three shows together. I love the What We Do In The Shadows tv series. I have always been a sucker (pun intended) for vampire gothic stuff. I got into it cos my gothic fiction tutor at Uni recommended it to me. I also liked Our Flag Means Death cos it was fun and it’s ‘pirates=freedom-from-social-norms’ felt very reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean which I loved as a kid (bisexual stereotype much? 😂). And I read Good Omens a few years back so I had to check out the show. So yeah I guess while I was very skeptical of SuperWhoLock as a teen, in my 20s I’ve accidentally fallen down the triple-fandom rabbit hole
